Privacy and Camera policy for the T1D app

The purpose of the T1D app is to provide users with information about type 1 diabetes and to offer a tool for easily calculating carbohydrates in food items.

To the extent personal data is processed within the T1D app, T1D Education AB, reg. no. 559481-8576, Ringtrastvägen 12, 352 42 Växjö, Sweden, is the data controller. You can reach us at info@t1d.se.

The T1D app is completely free of charge and requires neither an account nor a login. The app never requests information such as name, personal identity number, email address, phone number, or device ID. Information that you save yourself in the app, such as bookmarked foods and historical meal calculations, is stored solely locally on your phone and never reaches our servers. The T1D app does not share any data with external apps, systems, or organizations. The only exception is when you actively use the AI feature, as described below.

The only time data is transmitted from your app is when you use the AI feature to calculate carbohydrates in a meal. At that point, the photo of your meal is transmitted securely and encrypted via our middleware (API) to the Azure OpenAI Service in Microsoft’s data center in Sweden (Sweden Central) for analysis. The photo is used exclusively to identify food items. To enable us to resolve potential technical errors in the analysis, the request and image are stored temporarily in our secure server environment in Stockholm for 10 days, after which they are deleted. Additionally, the image is stored for up to 30 days in Microsoft’s security system for the purpose of preventing abuse, after which all data is permanently deleted. Images are never used to train AI models, are processed entirely independently without identifying location data, and are never linked to any specific device or user.

It is not permitted to photograph people, documents, or anything else that could identify an individual. If an image should inadvertently contain personal data, such as a face, this data is processed solely in the manner and for the duration described above. The processing is conducted based on T1D’s legitimate interest in providing the AI feature. Microsoft and the provider of our server environment process the images on our behalf in their capacity as data processors.

Since the images are not linked to any user, we are generally unable to determine which images belong to a specific individual. If you provide information that makes it possible to identify the image, you have the right to request access to, erasure of, and restriction of processing of the personal data, as well as the right to object to the processing. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection (Integritetsskyddsmyndigheten, www.imy.se).

The T1D app disclaims all liability for Apple’s and Google’s collection and management of personal data upon downloading the app via the App Store or Google Play. The T1D app refers to Apple’s and Google’s respective privacy policies in this regard.

Camera policy

The T1D app uses your device’s camera for two features:

• Barcode scanning: To read barcodes on food items and retrieve carbohydrate data. No image or user data is saved during barcode scanning.
• Meal analysis (AI): To analyze meals and estimate carbohydrate content. When you take a photo, it is sent securely and encrypted via our Sweden-based server environment to the Azure OpenAI Service in Microsoft’s data center in Sweden (Sweden Central) for analysis. The image is stored temporarily for 10 days in our server environment for technical troubleshooting and quality assurance, and for up to 30 days in Microsoft’s security system to prevent abuse, after which all data is permanently deleted. The image is never linked to your person or identity and is not used to train AI models.
